Finding Help
Hei Āwhina

Google Drive folder:  The go-to place for resources.  Become a member of ESSENZ here  and you will be given automatic access OR go to our website https://www.earthspacescience.org.nz/resources for access to individual folders. You will also be put onto our database so that you can receive notifications about workshops, events and new resources.

New-to-ESS teacher resources: These resources are useful for new-to-ESS teachers and for those who want to refresh or update their skills and knowledge. They can be found at this link here.

ESSENZ website: https://www.earthspacescience.org.nz/ - the ‘go-to’ place for news, conferences, field trips, and  resources, PLD news and webinars. Secure assessments are available for members of ESSENZ only.

Facebook: Look up Earth & Space Science Educators NZ or follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/872599616153949/?ref=bookmarks. Good for contacting other ESS teachers and getting ideas for assessments, field trips and class activities.

PLD workshop and webinar dates and other news: These will be sent out by Facebook notifications and member newsletters. Please read carefully to get up-to-date information.

PLD face-to-face workshops:  These are still being run in 2024 although a lot of these are being replaced with Zoom or Google Meet sessions because teachers aren't able to be released from class as easily as they once were. Look out for the PLD notifications.  In Term 4, face-to-face enrichment days will be held in some regions.
These workshops are free, and financial help is available for TRDs and travel, especially for rural/isolated teachers and new-to-ESS teachers, although all reasonable requests will be considered. See below for details.

PLD webinars: The webinars produced and posted can be found here.  Webinars are also available for L1 PESS standards, L2/3 help and for Scholarship classes and students.

Help for ESS teachers: ESSENZ has a network of Regional Representatives (RR) that can offer help to ESS teachers. such as helping design courses, helping with school moderation, letting you know the best field trip sites and running PLD workshops. Note that some of the regions overlap, so that teachers have a choice to suit their locality and needs, whether for individual help or workshop dates and venues.
The contact details for the regional representatives can be found here.

1on1 help: Because ESS has a relativel small cohort some teachers are not able to easily obtain the support that they need in areas such as ideas and task writing for internal standards, assistance with the moderation of student work and unfamiliar or difficult content in external standards. Contact your local RR for help here. For longer discussions we can arrange a Zoom or Google Meet.

Financial help for Rural/distance/new to ESS teachers: Our funding enables us to assist teachers who aren’t able to get funding to come to F2F workshops. This funding is for rural, distant teachers or for teachers new to ESS, but we will consider any reasonable request. We pay relief costs for the hours you would have worked at your school that day plus petrol for a car or mini-bus. If you think that you qualify email your regional representative

Resource development: When we know more about the changes to NCEA, we will be developing resources for these. If you would like to help with this mahi, please send your name and email address to Najin nbrock@masseyhigh.school.nz.

ESS Scholarship: Resources for both teachers and candidates are now available online here.
Zoom webinars can be found here. These webinars are on the content that needs to be covered, hints for approaching the exams, and old questions. Contact Jenny Pollock at  jenny@earthspacescience.org.nz
